A 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup group stage match between Portugal and Mexico ended in a 2-2 draw.

The UEFA and CONCACAF winners went head-to-head at Kazan Arena, and Portugal were the brighter of the two sides in a first half that was open and attacking.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino was something of a surprise visitor behind the scenes at Kazan Arena on Sunday. Since their 2-1 victory over New Zealand nine months ago, they have played 12 times for eight wins, three draws and just one loss, a 2-1 defeat at the end of May to 18th-ranked Croatia.

Javier Hernandez equalised with a low header from Carlos Vela's cross.

Vidal would succeed where his team-mate failed nine minutes from time, heading powerfully into the Cameroon net.

Fernando Santos sent Portugal out in a 4-4-2 formation on the Confederations Cup debut, with talisman and captain Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line alongside Nani but despite their obvious superiority on paper, they struggled to get a hold of the ball in the opening exchanges. "It was a fair result for how the teams played".

Substitute Cedric Soares looked like being the European champions' hero with his 86th-minute deflected shot, but Moreno's header from a corner spoiled the Southampton defender's celebration of his first global goal.

Easily the All Whites most familiar opponent in their group, Mexico are also the opposition New Zealand are most familiar with outside of the Oceania confederation in recent times. We have to win, because if we win the next game we will be one step away from qualifying.

The are VARs already making their presence felt early and were effective in ruling out what would have been a decisive goal.

'We are calm and we have to think about the next game. It was a litmus test for how far the team has come and whether the same weaknesses La Roja exposed would surface again against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.

Nani's 21st minute goal was disallowed by video assistants because a Portugal player was offside in the build up to the goal. The Chilean striker became the first player in football history with a goal denied and confirmed by the VAR.

Portugal, meanwhile, kept up their unbeaten run against the Mexicans and took their record to two wins and two defeats in the four matches contested from their first meeting in 1969.

"At the start we couldn't enjoy good control of the ball but then we managed to balance things out and could have won it". His goal in the 91st minute was also referred to the video assistant referees - presumably to check on another possible offside - but it stood.
