20 June 2017, 04:41 | Pamela Mathis

Russian Federation began their Confederations Cup campaign in flawless fashion with a 2-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday night.

The hosts almost went ahead after after seven minutes when Viktor Vasin's glancing header crashed against the upright with Stefan Marinovic well beaten.

After the game's second review, the goal and three points for Chile were confirmed.

But Russia sealed victory in the 69th minute when New Zealand fail to react fast enough to Samedov squared pass across goal - and there was Fedor Smolov to slot home unmarked from just a few yards out.

The All Whites barely threatened in the opening 45 minutes, as Roman Akinfeev enjoyed a quiet first stanza.

No offer received for Ronaldo, says Real boss
The current Ballon d'Or holder, at 32-years-old, has made public that he is not content at the Bernabeu and could seek to depart. He is now with the Portugal side at the Confederations Cup and his future plans will likely become clearer after its conclusion.

"Here, on modern football arenas there will be tough, honest, fair fight until the last minutes of the match", Putin said in Russian, adding that the eight-team, two-week event would "unite nations and continents, to promote the values of fair and lovely play".

The hosts won the opening match of Group A at the Krestovsky Stadium in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg.

From Russia's fourth corner, defender Viktor Vasin's header saw the ball spin off a post and across the goalmouth before Michael McGlinchey cleared.

Along with Team Russia, they will welcome teams from seven countries: New Zealand, Portugal, Mexico (Group A); and Germany, Chile, Cameroon and Australia (Group B).

"I don't know how it was to play on, but judging by the game it seemed the quality (of the pitch) was rather good".

Madrid sports media is awash with headlines suggesting Ronaldo wants out.

Russia, a record low 63rd in FIFA's world rankings, face Portugal on Wednesday while New Zealand play Mexico the same day.
