Russian Federation wins 2-0 in Confed Cup

Russian Federation began their Confederations Cup campaign in flawless fashion with a 2-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday night.

The hosts almost went ahead after after seven minutes when Viktor Vasin's glancing header crashed against the upright with Stefan Marinovic well beaten.

After the game's second review, the goal and three points for Chile were confirmed.

But Russia sealed victory in the 69th minute when New Zealand fail to react fast enough to Samedov squared pass across goal - and there was Fedor Smolov to slot home unmarked from just a few yards out.

The All Whites barely threatened in the opening 45 minutes, as Roman Akinfeev enjoyed a quiet first stanza.

The Russian ace slotted the ball over the keeper Stefan Marinovic but Micael Boxall attempting to clear off the line got the last touch - and the goal was credited to the New Zealander.

The organizing committee also confirmed that Russian low-income citizens, including families with many children, orphans and disabled people, will be able to visit the Confederations Cup matches for free.

Russia, a record low 63rd in FIFA's world rankings, face Portugal on Wednesday while New Zealand play Mexico the same day.
