Special Counsel Robert Mueller Is Reportedly Probing Jared Kushner's Business Dealings

20 June 2017, 05:43 | Darnell Patrick

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Jared Kushner, in particular Kushner's financial dealings, are under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. At the time of that report it was not clear that the FBI was investigating Kushner's business dealings.

Buried in tonight's Post report is this important revelation: FBI General Counsel James A. Baker did not want now-former FBI Director Jim Comey to "assure then-President-elect Trump that the FBI was not investigating him personally".

Special counsel Robert Mueller has brought 13 lawyers on board to handle the Russian Federation investigation, with plans to hire more, according to his spokesman Peter Carr. In a statement, Gorelick says that after the appointment of the special counsel, she advised Kushner "to obtain the independent advice of a lawyer with appropriate experience as to whether he should continue with us". "He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry".

It was previously reported that investigators were looking into meetings Kushner had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, as well as head of state-owned Russian bank Sergey Gorkov back in December of a year ago.

The investigation is still in the early stages, CNN reported, and not yet any indication that Jared Kushner or others involved in the probe could face criminal charges.

It's not entirely clear why Kushner met with Gorkov. "Nice", Trump wrote in his first tweet.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe. Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last month, citing the Russian Federation investigation as the reason. So I do think that - I caution the special counsel to stop with these leaks, conduct the investigation, and to allow Americans to believe what he's doing is ethical and above board.

The decision to hire Cullen has been in the works for weeks, aides to the vice president said. "And so that was his view throughout", Comey said. "And in fact, when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself - I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story".

Mueller's plans emerged just a week after Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Trump pressed him in February to ease up on an investigation into Flynn.

The newspaper noted Mueller had requested interviews with CIA Director Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.

Trump spoke to Coats and Rogers about the Russian Federation investigation, according to officials.
