Trump's lawyer says President not informed he is under investigation

20 June 2017, 04:31 | Darnell Patrick

President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser may be getting new legal representation as the special counsel investigation into Russia's election meddling heats up.

When the host noted that Sekulow had just twice said the president is under investigation, the attorney insisted otherwise. He made similar comments in three other TV appearances last Sunday. "At the tail end of our conversation, he jokingly said, 'By the way, I know you said I needed to spend $80 million, but I've only spent $30 million". He seemed to acknowledge that when he tweeted Friday.

Sekulow, contended tweet by the President this week saying "I am being investigated", was not a confirmation of the investigation, but instead a response to a report in The Washington Post.

Trump had posted earlier in the morning that Sekulow would be appearing on the Fox program, but the tweet was later removed. The reality for Trump is that special counsel Mueller's investigation is going ahead. But I can say that there is enough that we ought to be investigating. "He's being investigated for taking the action that the attorney general and deputy attorney general recommended him to take, by the agency who recommended the terminations".

The source familiar with the Mueller probe told Reuters that Mueller was also examining whether Trump or others tried to interfere with the investigation.

Critics say Sekulow's weekend interviews also showed off the difficulties of defending Trump. The issue is whether Trump criminally obstructed justice. As Salon's Heather Digby Parton points out, Sekulow's wife, brother, sons and sister-in-law "dominate the boards of both organizations" in an arrangement not dissimilar from how Trump ran his business and, to a lesser extent, the White House. Multiple sources tell People's Pundit Daily (PPD) that Mr. Mueller hasn't decided on the scope of the investigation, let alone whether it will eventually include President Trump.

Asked on NBC whether Trump's social-media commentary may be created to intimidate Rosenstein or Mueller, Sen. Tweets like these, however, indicate that Trump is massively frustrated and wants to get rid of Rosenstein, Mueller, and the Russian Federation investigation altogether.

The FBI "doesn't sit around all day and read tweets", said Rubio, a Republican from Florida who is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

"Trump has a compulsion to counterattack and is very pugnacious", Gingrich said on ABC's This Week.

"If you're steeped in how to proceed, how to be fair, you should try to avoid recusing yourself", Mack said.

A district court ruling doesn't have the precedental weight of a Supreme Court ruling like United States v. Nixon.

The committee sent a bipartisan letter this month to White House counsel Don McGahn seeking an answer by this Friday.

Former Department of Justice official John Malcolm told CNBC that "there is no question that he (Mueller) is close to Jim Comey" and that he "must keep an arm's length distance" from him. "They're essentially engaging in a scorched-earth litigation strategy that is beginning with trying to discredit the prosecutor".

Sekulow responded that Trump's firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey does not amount to obstruction of justice, before sparring with Cuomo over leaks to the press.

Trump's tweet was most likely in reference to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, whose memo he cited as justification for firing Comey, and who had appointed Mueller as special counsel.

Of course, that's what the president said last week.

"I don't believe it's going to happen", said Rubio on CNN's "State of the Union".

When asked by Sen.

Before Trump had tweeted he was under investigation, Mark Carallo, a spokesman for Trump's personal attorney Marc Kasowitz, did not deny the Post report but questioned the legality of the leaking information about the investigation, calling it " outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".
