Who is Jay Sekulow, Donald Trump's contradictory new lawyer?

President Donald Trump center with first lady Melania Trump and their son Barron Trump responds to a reporter's question upon arrival at the White House in Washington Sunday

Unfortunately for Sekulow, his introduction to the nation involved insisting across several networks that Trump was not being investigated for firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey - despite the president having tweeted on Friday that he was - and then admitting that, actually, he did not know if Trump was being investigated after all.

But Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal defense team, unequivocally denied during interviews on all of the major Sunday cable news talk shows over the weekend that Trump is the target of special prosecutor Robert Mueller's investigation. Speaking to a perplexed Jake Tapper on CNN, Sekulow said the president was responding to a Washington Post story and was not being investigated.

Skip to the end if you're impatient, but trust me, this is better if you eat it in three bites.

In the heated interview on Fox News Sunday, he first asserted that Trump was not being investigated.

On CBS' "Face the Nation", Sekulow also claimed Trump was not notified that he was under investigation.

WALLACE: You just said that he's being investigated. So he's being investigated for taking the action that the attorney general and deputy attorney general recommended him to take by the agency who recommended the termination.

"When the president's furious and tweets, it seems to make your job harder", Kilmeade said.

"You just said he's being investigated", Wallace noted. He takes the action that they also by the way, recommended, and now he's being investigated by the Department of Justice.

"Sir, you've just said two times that he's being investigated", Wallace pushed back.

"So the president is purportedly being investigated for doing what the Department of Justice, who's doing the investigation, asked him to do".

SEKULOW: No, Chris, I said that the. any. let me be crystal clear so you completely understand.

On his website, Sekulow describes himself as "as one of the foremost free speech and religious liberties litigators in the United States, having argued 12 times before the U.S. Supreme Court in some of the most groundbreaking First Amendment cases of the past quarter century". "That is protected under the constitution".

But Sekulow was insistent that he didn't just say what he just said. Jay, the tape will speak for itself. So there's more than just the fact that he fired Comey. That tarmac meeting happened about a week before then-FBI Director James B. Comey announced that no charges would be filed in the probe of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

"So if the legal theory they were applying was correct, this is what it would be: The president of the United States takes legal action based on a recommendation from the Department of Justice to remove the Federal Bureau of Investigation director".

"A lot of you have been asking to have a voice on this", he said.

Exasperated, Wallace replied, "Actually, what I'm trying to get is a straight answer out of you".
