New York Six Flags guests catch teen who fell from ride

26 June 2017, 11:41 | Marion Schneider

A teenage girl fell from a gondola at an upstate NY amusement park on Saturday, plunging 25 feet into a crowd of park-goers and employees who'd gathered to catch her.

The teen was treated by park staff before being taken to a local hospital by ambulance before being airlifted to Albany Medical Centre 55 miles away.

Shocking footage shows the young girl dangling from the ride while it passes over crowds in the NY amusement park.

The sheriff's office said in a statement that the girl was riding the attraction with a child relative, and fell from a stationary two-person auto.

Video captured at the scene shows her dangling from the two-person gondola as park guests gather below her.

As she dangled in the air, the group of men convinced the girl to let herself drop into their arms. A crowd gathered, many filming, others calling for help.

"I'm just glad we could be there to help", Ms Winchell said. "They'll catch you, honey, go ahead!"

The 14-year-old teenager who fell from the ride is reportedly in "good spirits".

The young girl appeared to be unconscious as she was taken away by medical personnel, first to be treated at the park, and later at the hospital.

Howard received treatment for a minor back injury following the daring rescue and was later released.

Loren Lent, whose wife and daughter were on the ride, said it had no seatbelts, but did have a bar running across it to keep people in.

"No one wants to put himself underneath a body like that, but I couldn't stand by and watch". At this time, it is unclear what caused the girl to slip from her seat and fall off the ride.

Mr Lent said she was dangling for at least 90 seconds, and possibly a few minutes.

The Six Flags ride from which the girl fell is called the "Sky Ride". "My daughter was just traumatized", he said.

The operator brought the ride to a stop after learning that a rider was in distress. "She was crying for about a half-hour after".

When asked about safety procedures at the park, Hansen said all rides have a standard evacuation plan.

When asked whether the girl's evacuation from the ride had followed protocol, Wood did not specify but said that all rides have a "standard evacuation plan".

"I'll never let my family on that ride again", he said.

Park officials said the ride was working properly.
