Facebook testing GIF creator as camera option in iOS app

How do you do, fellow kids: Facebook now lets you create wacky GIFs, because of course

Some Facebook users will now be able to create their own GIFs using the camera function in the social networking giant's app.

Good news if you have an iOS device and now use Facebook as the company is testing out a GIF creator on the iOS app. TNW's report says that the GIFs created through the feature are short, lasting only a few seconds, which is pretty much how GIFs are meant to be. Now, the Facebook camera gets a new function that lets users create animated GIFs. The fact that the GIF creator even uses the Facebook Camera is a good sign that Facebook is finally going to make GIFs a priority, at least somewhat. You can also add the GIF to your Facebook story, post it to your profile, or save it to your device. Either way, you will see these tabs at the top of the next screen: Normal and GIF.

GIFs are hugely popular form of self-expression on a number of social networks, including apps like Twitter and Tumblr, but Facebook had been slow to adopt the medium.

A Facebook representative confirmed the feature is now being tested with a "very small number of iOS users" for the time being, but notes there will be more information about this GIF maker arriving in a few weeks' time. When swiping to the left to bring up the Facebook Camera, there will be a new mode at the top. The only other piece of information we know about the GIF creator on the Facebook iOS app is that it is definitely being tested out according to Facebook reps.

You can only share GIFs on Facebook.
