Motives unclear for deadly knife attack in Egypt's Red Sea resort

CAIRO | Two foreign women have been killed and four injured Friday in an attack with a knife on a beach of the seaside resort of Hurghada in eastern Egypt, according to officials.

Egypt's tourism industry, a main source of national income, has been in the doldrums since the 2011 uprising against long-time dictator Hosny Mubarak.

Egyptian security forces have been battling insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula.

A German Foreign Ministry statement said "We can now sadly confirm that two German tourists died in the attack at Hurghada".

"Our fellow countrywoman happened to be a very courageous woman as she was fending off the knife attacker fearlessly in Hurghada", Polyakov said, adding that her bravery could have possibly saved her life.

The four wounded victims included three tourists from Serbia and one from Poland, according to an Egyptian security official quoted by the AP news agency.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Germany's Embassy in Cairo is working with Egyptian authorities to gain clarity about the individuals involved.

The interior ministry said that the militants sprayed the policemen's vehicle with bullets from machine guns as the security force was on the move to patrol the surroundings.

He then swam to a nearby beach and attacked and wounded two more people at the Sunny Days El Palacio resort before he was overpowered by staff and arrested.

The last time tourists were attacked in Hurghada was in January 2016, when two Austrians and a Swede were stabbed by two suspected militants, also at a hotel.

Russian Federation suspended all flights to Egypt in response and has yet to resume them.

Elsewhere on Friday, gunmen ambushed a checkpoint in Giza province south of Cairo, shooting and killing five policemen and setting their auto on fire.

The jihadists have threatened to carry out further attacks on Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's 90 million people.
