Iraq Mosul Western hypocrisy laid bare
Weeks later the head of the terrorist group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, announced the formation of a self-styled caliphate in Iraq and Syria from the pulpit of a Mosul mosque. The neighborhood has witnessed sporadic clashes since last week, despite the official announcement of the "complete liberation" of the city.
When Daesh captured Mosul back in 2014, the Iraqi government faced criticism for being unable to defend one of its largest cities.
On Monday, Iraq's Prime Minister Haider Abadi declared the liberation of Mosul, which had been held by ISIL terrorists for three years.
The group of women, who were arrested on Thursday, included citizens of Germany (five), Russian Federation (three), Turkey (three), Canada (two), Chechnya (one) and from Libya and Syria (six in total), according to al-Araji.
The city of Mosul was the main stronghold of the IS, since the group occupied it in June 2014, until its expulsion in July by joint Iraqi forces, in an offensive that began in October 2016.
"We have another mission ahead of us, to create stability, to build and clear ISIS cells, and that requires an intelligence and security effort, and the unity which enabled us to fight ISIS", he said before raising an Iraqi flag.
An official week-long celebration was declared countrywide. Baghdad and other provinces nationwide are now witnessing Iraqis celebrating ISIS terrorists being driven out of their former bastion Mosul. Backed by the US -led worldwide coalition, Iraq last October launched a wide-scale military offensive to recapture Mosul and the surrounding areas, with various Iraqi military, police and paramilitary forces taking part in the operation.
