Wimbledon 2017: Martina Hingis-Jamie Murray win mixed doubles title

Finland's Henri Kontinen and Britain's Heather Watson return to Britain's Jamie Murray and Switzerland's Martina Hingis during the Mixed Doubles final match on day thirteen at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London Sunday

Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray rounded off the Wimbledon finals and the matches of the fortnight by beating defending champions Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen on Sunday on Centre Court.

Murray wasn't planning to play mixed doubles at Wimbledon this year, but Martina is a hard woman to say no to.

The duo only chose to strike up a partnership in the days leading up to The Championships, but breezed through the draw without dropping a single set, overcoming defending champions Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen 6-4 6-4 in the final on Centre Court.

Murray won the mixed title 10 years ago with Serbian player Jelena Jankovic.

When you have won 22 Grand Slam titles and remain one of the outstanding doubles players in the women's game, the concept that a potential mixed doubles partner would turn you down seems hard to understand. "I just saw him there", Jamie said. "No, I don't take 'no" as an answer pretty much".

The crowd's support was certainly evenly spread, but Murray was the star of the show and he earned the first break with a dart across the net, but a poor game from Hingis allowed Watson and Kontinen instantly to hit back. In the first set, as both men held easily, the key battles were fought on the Watson and Hingis serve.

City have closed the signing of Vasco da Gama midfielder Douglas, who is set to be loaned out to Girona for the new season. Director of Football at City, Txiki Begiristain , said: " We are pleased to welcome Douglas ".

They had to work for the title - saving three break points as they looked to serve it out, before Murray finished it off on his serve. It's great to be in a grand slam final and I'm really looking forward to it on Sunday.

A stinging Hingis return set up two break points, and she and Murray converted the second when Watson chipped a short ball into the net.

And after brother Andy's disappointing quarter-final exit to Sam Querrey, this triumph at least means that the Murray family name will be on a Wimbledon trophy for the third time in just five years.

Many fans on the Hill had also kept up to date with events at Silverstone, where Lewis Hamilton had earlier won the British Grand Prix for a record-equalling fifth time. I think he just waited in the lockers.

'It was a great opportunity for me to have a great shot to win, ' said Murray. 'A unusual feeling today, we haven't felt it yet together.
