People Injured After Being Ejected From Boat in Indiana
17 July 2017, 05:06 | Max Haynes
Indiana Conservation Officers, Steuben County Sheriff's Department, Steuben County EMS, Orland Fire Dept., and Parkview Samaritan Helicopter responded to the scene.
Four of the people that were thrown off the boat have severe injuries. One person was believed to have a skull fracture and another a partial amputation of their lower arm. Other injured people were taken to Cameron Memorial Hospital in Angola for treatment of less serious injuries.
A Ski Nautique motorboat that was involved in the accident was still under power and unmanned, circling the lake at approximately 30 miles per hour.
The boat slammed into a dock and a patrol boat with two conservation officers on board, but they were not injured.
Eventually, the rope in the Ski Nautique's propeller slowed the boat enough that Carlile was able to use a nearby personal watercraft to get close to it and then jump into the boat, which he then stopped, the report said. It said the boat then struck a dock and changed direction, striking the back of the patrol boat and disabling the patrol boat's motor.
She was arrested, accused of boating while intoxicated causing injury and being a minor in possession of alcohol.
At approximately 7:13 p.m. on Saturday night, a 20-foot boat being driven by Fort Wayne resident Dominique Effinger cut into a violent turn, ejecting all 10 people that were on the vessel. The boat continued at a high rate of speed, traveling unmanned around Lake Gage, causing further serious bodily injury and property damage.
Authorities say alcohol was a factor.
That's when it slowed enough for IN conservation officer Jake Carlile to jump on board from a jet ski. A DNR statement said an initial report to conservation officers indicated four injured, but the exact number of people injured has not been confirmed.
