The Planet of the Apes Prequels May Not Be Over Yet By Germain Lussier on 11 Jul 2017 at 9:00PM “In our minds the story’s not over.”
"War for the Planet of the Apes", 20th Century Fox's third installment in the dystopian film series about a war between man and simian, opened as the No. 1 movie in North America this weekend, toppling Sony Corp.'s superhero feature "Spider-Man: Homecoming". Though that was a bit below the $163 million Spider-Man: Homecoming brought in last week, it was still an impressive number given the competition it faced this week. War for the Planet of the Apes cost $150 million to make and used motion capture (Andy Serkis plays Caesar) and CGI to bring the apes to life. "'War for the Planet of the Apes' not only climbs to new heights in its world but doesn't leave the Earth scorched in terms of where it might go from here".
CNN's Brian Lowry called it the "summer's best sequel".
Taking the top-spot on the domestic charts this weekend was "War for the Planet of the Apes", which had a $56M opening weekend.
"This franchise stands apart from others with its epic episodic storytelling, with very compelling characters that critics and audiences alike embrace", Aronson said. It tells the "Planet of the Apes" origin story: how highly intelligent apes slowly take over the planet.
The latest "Apes" movie came in more than 20 percent behind the last installment, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", which was also directed by Matt Reeves and debuted to 72.6 million US dollars in 2014. The arrival of War for the Planet of the Apes may have also been a contributing factor into the hefty decrease.
OJ Simpson to fight for parole
Simpson will have an opportunity to address the board by video conference as he did during the 2013 hearing. Four members of the six-person parole board will be in the hearing room in Carson City.
"Despicable Me 3" was on track to add $18.9 million to its total this weekend, and will have a three-week running total of $188 million by Sunday evening. Gru's third film is in its third week, and has grossed a total of $187 million in just under a month.
Cracking the top 5 is none other than the Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan-starring The Big Sick with an estimated $7.6 million. Factoring in inflation and War would have the lowest opening of the new trilogy.
Next weekend may well continue the streak of well-reviewed summer releases. First up is Christopher Nolan's latest, DUNKIRK.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at USA and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. But overseas audiences are still turning out in healthy numbers for Gru with the worldwide cume now up to $431.4M (led by China's $113.6M) and global at a solid $619.4M on its way to at least $850M. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
