Sri Lanka 2011 World Cup final was fixed, alleges Arjuna Ranatunga

Ranatunga said he was in India giving commentaries during the pinnacle tournament and was in distress after the team lost the match against the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side

In a shocking development, former Sri Lankan great Arjuna Ranatunga has alleged that the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka was fixed.

However, Indian players like Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra have rubbished the allegations of Ranatunga. I can not reveal what happened on that day, but I would someday reveal the truth with proof. "There must be an inquiry", said Ranatunga.

India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets with 10 balls remaining to complete a truly historic victory over Sri Lanka.

However, after that the India side strengthened its position thanks to some poor fielding and bowling performance by the Sri Lankan side. Arjuna Ranatunga is regarded as one of the best captains in cricket history, he reduced himself to a laughing stock with the claim.

According to a report in Sri Lanka's English newspaper Daily Mirror, Ranatunga, while reacting to former skipper Kumar Sangakkara's comments on whose behest the 2009 tour of Pakistan was arranged, said: "Sangakkara wants an inquiry into the tour of Pakistan then they should have one".

The veteran cricketer-turned-politician who was in India at that time said: "When we lost, I was distressed and I had a doubt".

Ashish Nehra, on the other hand, also seconded Gambhir's opinion saying, "I don't wish to dignify Ranatunga's comments by airing my views on the issue". "There is no end for these kinds of statements".

Gautam Gambhir, who was India's highest run-scorer in the final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, said that he is surprised by Ranatunga's statement and if he wants to make such a serious statement, he must back it with proof. His most memorable achievement was leading a team of relative unknowns to World Cup glory in 1996.

"But yes, it is disappointing when someone of his stature says something like this". This is not the first time that Ranatunga has raised questions about the 2011 World Cup final.
