Evo Japan 2018 Announced for January, Eight Games Confirmed
The trailer reveals the EVO Japan game line-up, which includes Bandai Namco's Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, King of Fighters XIV, Blazblue: Central Fiction, Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, Street Fighter V, and Nintendo's very own ARMS.
Notably: this is the first time that ARMS was confirmed for an EVO event of any sort. More specifically, though, users have commented that its near-exact replication of Super Smash Bros. is disappointing. A couple of glimmers of hope are found within the responses to the trailer, but many are heavily criticizing the art, animations, and sounds, three things that basically make up the entirety of what's been shown so far.
There are also notable absences among the lineup: Marvel vs Capcom Infinite and Dragon Ball FighterZ, despite their anticipation, will not grace the stage except maybe in a demo or showcase capacity (in Dragon Ball's case, the full game won't be out until next year anyhow). The title is meant to be a good entry point for those who might have been interested in getting into Super Smash Bros. But if you stuck around the Smash Bros. games for their fighting gameplay and liked what was done with Project M, you'll want to check out what Wavedash has in store with their new full game.
This year's summer Evo event included six of the seven games that will be at Evo Japan, with Arms missing out in favour of Melee and Injustice 2. It didn't go on its yearly schedule, however, until the turn of the millennium with Battle by the Bay 4, which introduced Marvel vs Capcom 2 to its competitive lineup. Evo Japan finally happens on January 26-28 2018. A Japanese Evo event was originally announced in 2010 and was scheduled for May 2011, but the deadly Tohoku earthquakes in March of 2011 forced the event's indefinite postponement.
