The seven White Helmets were killed at close range early on Saturday morning

"The civil defense center in Sarmin was the target of an armed attack by unknown assailants in which seven volunteers were killed", the White Helmets said in a statement.

The first responders, commonly known as the White Helmets, operate in rebel-control territory and have frequently been targeted by regime forces.

UOSSM call on all concerned parties, the worldwide community, and human rights organizations to conduct a full investigation into this heinous crime.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the seven volunteers had all been killed by bullets to the head. The targeting of aid workers is a clear violation of International Humanitarian Law, UOSSM calls on the international community to protect aid workers and prosecute perpetrators to full extent. The White Helmets emerged in 2013, working to rescue civilians in rebel-held areas.

Sarmin is controlled by the Hayat Tahrir al Sham jihadist alliance, which was formed when the Nusra Front merged with other groups.

Red Wings denounce use of logo during demonstration, threaten legal action
Among the white-power supporters is an anti-immigrant group called the Detroit Right Wings, which has co-opted a pretty familiar-looking logo.

Their detractors, including President Bashar al-Assad's government and his ally Russian Federation, accuse them of being the tools of their global donors.

Although its volunteers work in exclusively rebel-held areas, the group insists it is not partisan.

The gunmen "executed the volunteers with a gunshot to the head and stole everything in the center", tweeted Khaled Khatib, a cameraman for the White Helmets.

It now has over 3,000 volunteers conducting rescue missions across rebel-held parts of Syria.
