Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio: All options on table for North Korea

Peggy Noonan: The North Korea Crisis Is Not Your Father's Cuban Missile Crisis

War of words between North Korea and US

So it is more than a little eerie, here on August 9, 2017, that the top story around the world is that of North Korea and its threats to possibly target the island of Guam, a US territory in the Pacific Ocean, with a nuclear-tipped missile. Bombs land on places believed to hide long-range missiles deep below the earth.

If all of that is true, North Korea is no longer a gadfly country ruled by a maniacal dictator with a small arsenal of nuclear weapons that can not be delivered long distances.

"A worst case, involving the operation of the Experimental Light Water Reactor (ELWR) at Yongbyon, is that it would have up to 60 nuclear weapons by the end of 2020", David Albright of ISIS wrote in August 2017.

The "nuclear threat" section of the emergency preparedness section of the city's website defines a nuclear blast as "an explosion with intense light and heat, a damaging pressure wave and widespread radioactive material that can contaminate the air, water and ground surfaces for miles around".

"North Korea poses a serious threat to the USA and all options should be on the table to protect the American people", Nelson said in a statement. The policy and practice of the United States on threats to use nuclear weapons has been consistent for many decades, and for presidents of both political parties. You can probably guess who North Korea considers the enemy. Therefore, that country will be the one that can best integrate North Korea into the family of responsible nations. In fact, equity prices are falling all over the world from the war talk.

Kim Jong Il focused much of his time in office on making North Korea a nuclear power. Indeed, as the scale of the potential disaster comes home to North Korean strategists, you can see them start to play with the idea of a “limited nuclear war.”.

The loss of life in that conflict would be monumental.

But successive USA administrations have also underestimated the country - and nowhere could such a mistake be more risky than in the case of military conflict.

The big questions: What does North Korea want, and is it willing to risk nuclear war? But there's little doubt everyone aware of the war will never be the same. After Imperial Japan's surrender, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel. The BBC also points out that North Korea said the January 2016 test was of a hydrogen bomb, not an atomic bomb.

North Korea's leadership knows that "if there was to be warfare, the regime would be finished".

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson briefly said that the US was not seeking to change the North Korean regime last week, although he was nearly immediately contradicted by President Trump.

"If there were any serious move on the American side toward some kind of military strike, I think the North Koreans would back off really quickly, and in a very visible way". But it can have enough of them to carry out a “revenge from the grave” and impose unacceptable losses on the United States if it attacks North Korea.
