Mourners wearing heart-shaped stickers have gathered at a lake-front stage in the U.S. city of Minneapolis to remember Australian woman Justine Damond, who was shot dead by a police officer last month.

People attending are encouraged to wear blue, one of Justine's favorite colors.

The sound of two didgeridoos being played next to the Australian flag highlighted Ruszczyk's heritage. A memorial service is set for 7 p.m., followed by a silent walk around Lake Harriet.

Her fiance, Don Damond, and her father, John Ruszczyk, were among those scheduled to speak at the public memorial.

Ruszczyk, 40, called 911 late July 15 to report a possible sexual assault in the alley near her home.

The single bullet struck in her in the abdomen at the drivers window.

Noor's partner, Officer Matthew Harrity, told investigators a noise startled him just before Damond approached their police SUV.

Lawyers for the killer police officer, Noor, 36, claim he felt he was being ambushed when he pulled the trigger and shot Ms Damond.
