PGA Championship 2017 Tee Times: Pairings and Predictions for Saturday Schedule
12 August 2017, 07:02 | Megan Pierce
Ryan Fox plays from a bunker on the first hole during his opening round of the PGA Championship
Heading into the second round of play Friday there are 24 golfers within three shots of the lead - now shared by Thorbjorn Olesen and Kevin Kisner at -4.
He identified four or five holes where he could make birdie, and he played for par everywhere else.
Yet one-over 72 and tied-33rd on the opening day at the PGA Championships is not a disaster and I am only five behind as there were no too many deep scores.
Starting on the back nine alongside fellow 2017 major winners Koepka and Sergio Garcia, Spieth opened with five pars before carding his first birdie on the par-five 15th, only to promptly give the shot back on the next after finding two bunkers.
Spieth didn't make a putt longer than 5 feet - that was for par on his second hole.
"I was playing the mini-tours, and I was broke", he recalled.
Kisner built himself a pretty comfortable cushion thanks to a chip-in eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.
At 24, he would become the youngest on the career Slam list by winning the Wanamaker Trophy this week, about six months younger than the mark held by Woods. A couple of other golfers who were in the top 25 in betting odds entering the event who would love to start this tournament over again are Branden Grace and Thomas Pieters - both entered the event at 50/1 and now sit at 500/1 after carding a 77 (+6) and 79 (+8) respectively. He still hit the ball so well that he grabbed two birdies late in the round that enabled him to keep the damage to a minimum.
"I'm just excited about the opportunity", Kisner said. He hit only nine greens, but missed shots in the right spots and scrambled very well (8 of 9), making only one bogey on the day.

Danny Lee tees off on the second hole of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow
The 33-year-old from SC has won twice on the PGA Tour, and has also lost four times in playoffs.
There will be those who will wonder if Kisner has the staying power to finish off a major, even after such a strong start.
The idea is I have to get rid of negativity and also not be over enthusiastic in cases like back-to-back birdies or similar. Kisner leads the field in greens in regulation, going 30-for-36 through two rounds, despite having an average approach shot of 186 yards. "The key around here is keeping the ball out of the fairway". That might be the worst thing that happened all day to Kisner. "The PGA is such a great brand, and they do a lot for the game, and a lot of these guys wouldn't be where they are without a PGA professional, and I'm no different".
Kisner, 33, endured four runner-up finishes in 2015 before a breakthrough first US PGA Tour victory at Sea Island, Georgia, in his 109th attempt.
He sent the putt some 25 feet to the right along a spine, it slowed as it caught the ridge and then turned hard to left and stopped a foot from the hole.
"I guess a low round used to be a 61 or a 62", McIlroy said.
