Walmart issues apology for back-to-school gun display

Unfortunately, its "Own the school year like a hero" merchandising has ended up in one of its United States stores' sporting goods departments.
The photo was quickly condemned by people on social media, prompting Walmart officials to issue an apology on Twitter.
Walmart did not immediately respond to Daily Dot questions about the sign and in which store it was placed.
"What's seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores", the company said in a statement.
Initial reports were the display was at a Walmart store on Evansville's west side.

Leeanna May said she was at the Evansville Walmart early Wednesday morning with her husband near the sporting goods section, where May spotted what she described as the "disgusting" display. "We're very sorry and checking into how this could have happened".
"We have already lost so many innocent lives to guns", she said.

This is not the first time Walmart has run into trouble with marketing mishaps. The company spokesperson also told the paper that though it's unclear if the sign was placed there by an employee or a shopper, the photo appears to be legitimate based on the way the store is configured.
Crowson told CNNMoney on Wednesday evening Walmart was still trying to find the sign and gun display.
Last September, a Walmart in Panama City Beach put up stacked boxes of Coca-Cola to resemble the World Trade Center in an apparent attempt to commemorate 9/11.
