Army Men, 3 Militants Killed In Shopian Encounter

Three militants, including top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Yasin Itoo, were killed in an over 24 hour-long gunfight that ended on Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district and also left two soldiers dead.

An encounter has broken out between terrorists and security forces in Shopian town of south Kashmir.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation yesterday following information about the presence of terrorists in Awnira village of Zainapora area of the district.

Two Army personnel were killed and three others, including an officer, were injured during the initial phase of the gunfight late on Saturday night. Supporting the militants, locals have been reported to have pelted stones on the forces as soon as the firing started.

Residents said forces blasted four houses in an attempt to kill the militants who are "shifting their location".

Five army soldiers were injured in the gunfight. The cordon and search operation is on in the area, the police spokesman said.
