Charlottesville mayor urges protesters to 'go home' following violence

For President Donald Trump, this was the week when the real world began to intrude upon his presidency.

President Donald Trump on Saturday blamed "many sides" for the violent clashes between protesters and white supremacists in Virginia and contended that the "hatred and bigotry" broadcast across the country had taken root long before his political ascendancy.

"We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for", Trump said in a message on Twitter. Vice President Mike Pence supported the president's speech. "U.S is greatest when we join together & oppose those seeking to divide us". First lady Melania Trump tweeted almost an hour before the president or vice president on Saturday. ".[L] et's communicate w/o hate in our hearts". No good comes from violence.

But he did not specifically address the vehicular attack.

Throughout the day, cable news networks played shocking and even chilling images of neo-Nazis and white nationalists marching in the streets of Charlottesville as they were protesting plans to remove a statute of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Kessler, in an interview, denied the use of torches was tied to the notorious white supremacist group.

Then, last but not least, is what Trump said a few paragraphs after his "on many sides" comment.

Instead, the man whose vicious attacks against Hillary Clinton, John McCain, federal judges, fellow Republican leaders and journalists helped define him both in and out of the White House simply blamed "many sides". He lashed out at Trump for his remarks, a fact the New York Times neglects to note in its article about the criticism of the president. But, when they do happen, we need the person we elected to lead us to, you know, lead us.
