Some market participants say the paring of bearish bets against the Japanese yen has probably added to its gains this week.

European bourses also looked set to open lower across the board, with Eurostoxx 50 futures already down 0.7 percent in early trade.

Simmering tensions between the USA and North Korea were also weighing on the market. The Nasdaq composite lost 76 points, or 1.2 percent, to 6,275.

The big four banks were all lower led by ANZ which was down 1.91 per cent at $29.26. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 2.26 percent.

In Europe, France's CAC 40 fell 1.6 percent to 5,135 while Germany's DAX was down 1.3 percent at 12,133. Macy's was down 4.4 percent after the company said its sales continued to decline in the second quarter.
