Eclipse Day Timeline: Exactly What Will Happen on August 21

Most people across the US, northern Mexico and Southern Canada will see a partial solar eclipse from a meager 30 percent in La Paz, Mexico, to 99 percent near the path of maximum lunar shadow, or the path of totality.

For Zeiler, that first time was in 1991 in Baja California, Mexico.

"This is historical, and I would encourage everyone to see it", said Nathan Podoll, M.D., assistant professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). "It's the most lovely object in nature".

On Saturday, KGW's photography staff received an email from Amazon, explaining the solar filters the station purchased for the August 21 total solar eclipse were not confirmed safe for viewing. That means the moon will cover more than 99 percent of the sun when viewed from Dalton, plunging the area into darkness.

On Aug. 21, the moon will pass in front of the sun and darken the sky in what experts predict may be the most viewed natural phenomenon in history. Do not remove them while looking at the sun. There is bound to be plenty of traffic the day of the eclipse and you don't want to be stuck in traffic while it's happening!

"So, when the moon is orbiting around the Earth, it actually has an incline compared to that sun-Earth plane [of] about 5 degrees", he explains. NASA-funded studies during this eclipse will look at the effects from the eclipse on our atmosphere as well as what happens on land.

Pihlström and UNM students will host a viewing party at the UNM Campus Observatory on the day of the eclipse. That's one good, safe way for viewing. Plus, so many live within eight hours driving distance of it. The sky was blacked out, and the sun was a little glowing orange orb.

The US has solar-eclipse fever.

Zeiler, creator of, suggested a different viewing method. Tiny crescent suns may be scattered on the ground beneath trees. Roseburg will however be in a prime spot to see a rare type of solar eclipse, the annular or "Ring of Fire" solar eclipse.

But every so often, there's a narrow window when the Earth, sun and moon align. Therefore, the outer edges of the sun are still visible during its peak. The last total eclipse that crossed the entire continent occurred on June 8, 1918 and the last time a total solar eclipse occurred exclusively in the USA was in 1778.

Hopkinsville, Kentucky could be the closest location for "Totality" to the Hoosier state.

That's about a 10-hour, 650-mile drive.

Approximately 1 million people are expected to travel to OR for the eclipse.

"People have some of the best glasses in the world in their hands right now and they don't believe in that product", he said.

Leading scientists tell us that post-eclipse, the only two things they expect to survive are cockroaches and Facebook.

"People will never regret the effort", he said. HINT: while wearing a pair of undamaged glasses (ones that are not scratched, torn or with holes) you shouldn't be able to see anything except the mild glow of the sun when looking toward the sun.

The 17 westernmost counties of North Carolina lie on the path of totality, as well as the SC cities of Columbia and Greenville.
