France's Macron speaks to Trump, warns over N Korea escalation

GETTY REUTERSTensions between North Korea and the US continue to ratchet

Kim Jong-un Trump and missile launch

US officials and others familiar with the exchanges say they're occurring between the USA envoy for North Korea policy and a senior North Korean diplomat at the country's United Nations mission.

During an appearance at the Netroots Nation conference in Atlanta Friday, Ellison addressed the recent exchange of inflammatory rhetoric between Trump and North Korea, saying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was acting more responsibly than the US president.

Calling it "the responsibility of all", Macron called on the global community to "act in a concerted, firm and effective manner, as it has just done in the (U.N.) Security Council, to bring North Korea back to the path of dialogue".

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday warned against an "escalation of tensions" over North Korea amid a growing war of words between Washington and Pyongyang. "What we need is someone bringing calm to the situation, not spiking it".

President Donald Trump says his critics are only complaining about his tough rhetoric on North Korea "because it's me".

The Chinese foreign ministry said Xi urged Trump to avoid "words and deeds" that would "exacerbate" the already-tense situation and to exercise restraint and seek a political settlement.

The call followed the latest barrage of threats from Mr Trump, declaring the U.S. military forces were "locked and loaded" and warning Kim he "will regret it fast" if he takes any action against U.S. territories or allies.

Despite the increasingly bellicose statements, Mr Trump's comments did not appear to be backed by significant military mobilisation on either side of the Pacific, while a discreet diplomatic back channel with the regime is reported to remain open.
