The Swiss franc and the Japanese yen are often sought in times of geopolitical tension and have logged big gains against the dollar this week after U.S. President Donald Trump warned North Korea that it would face "fire and fury" if it threatened the United States.

A picture released by Korean Central News Agency showing North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Hwasong-14 being launched at an undisclosed place in North Korea.

"I know we woke up to media reports of North Korea's talk of revenge on the United States and this so-called newfound technology that allows them to target Guam".

After decades of living peacefully, Guam authorities are urging their citizens to be prepared for an "imminent" missile attack from North Korea after the rogue state threatened to unleash "enveloping fire" at the small island sitting 9,700km from the USA mainland.

The US island territory's Office of Civil Defence began distributing fact sheets, Preparing for an Imminent Missile Threat, on Friday, to help people prepare for an attack.

The document includes several ominous warnings, the first being: "Do not look at the flash or fireball - It can blind you".

To prevent radioactive material from spreading, people should remove their outer clothing, seal it in a plastic bag and get as far away as possible, the fact sheet says.

But do not scratch or scrub skin and "do not use conditioner because it will bind radioactive material to your hair".

Officials haven't raised the US territory's threat level even after Pyongyang laid out plans to strike near the island in the coming weeks, Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo said.

He noted that Guam had many buildings made to withstand powerful typhoons, but acknowledged that nothing can protect against a thermonuclear attack.
