Miami Marlins Sold To Derek Jeter Backed Group

An investment group led by a NY businessman and Players Tribune editor-in-chief Derek Jeter has made the winning bid to buy the Miami Marlins, according to multiple reports.

Sherman is going to be the managing general partner of the team, according to the Herald, while Jeter, who put in about $25 million, will focus on the player development and business sides of the team.

Retired financier Bruce Sherman, who along with Yankees icon Derek Jeter was the winning bidder to purchase the Miami Marlins franchise, has been in contact with Jorge Mas, the Miami businessman who was the second-place finisher for the team, about joining the group, sources say.

Jeter has not been shy about his desire to own a baseball team.

Others have pointed out that there is a major difference between being good at playing sports and being good at running a sports team, using the example of Michael Jordan and his ownership of the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets.

Yankees put RHP Tanaka on DL with shoulder inflammation
Tanaka is in the fourth year of a seven-year $155 million contract that permits him to "opt-out" after this season. Tanaka is the second Yankees pitcher to go on the disabled list this week, after CC Sabathia was placed on Friday.

But for most Marlins fans, just punting Loria out the door is a victory in and of itself.

Specifically, Jeter said he would like to be an owner like the late George Steinbrenner, whom Jeter played under for 16 seasons.

Heyman reports that Mas could invest up to $300 million, giving him a significant share within the franchise.

However, it may be too early for Miami fans to celebrate just yet.

The Marlins were sold for $1.2 billion by owner Jeffrey Loria. The deal will still have to approved by three-quarters of baseball's owners.
