Trump to call for China IT trade probe on Monday

Thousands of North Korea's top military officers have marched through Pyongyang in a show of support for their dictator Kim Jong-un

But experts say China, which accounts for around 90% of North Korea's foreign trade, is unwilling to squeeze Kim's regime hard enough to make it give up on its nuclear program because that would risk the chaotic collapse of a state that Beijing wants to keep as a strategic buffer. Trump made addressing the United States trade deficit with China a centre-piece of his campaign past year and has suggested raising tariffs on goods from China.

After the telephones talks on Saturday, the White House said in a statement that the two leaders discussed the increasingly risky situation associated with North Korea's destabilizing and escalatory behavior.

As the crisis has unfolded, Trump has alternated praising China for its help and chiding it for not doing more. Xi urged both sides not to do anything that would aggravate tensions.

"The Chinese leader expressed Beijing's willingness to maintain communication with the USA to appropriately resolve the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue", the network reported.

Trump also reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, it added.

On Saturday, administration officials said the new trade measure was "totally unrelated" to events involving North Korea.

Calling it "the responsibility of all", Macron called on the worldwide community to "act in a concerted, firm and effective manner, as it has just done in the (U.N.) Security Council, to bring North Korea back to the path of dialogue".

The forced sharing of intellectual property with Chinese firms has been a long-standing concern of the USA business community.

The Chinese policies of an American company to enter into a join venture with a Chinese company to do business is "not fair", the official said.

Michael Wessel, a commissioner on the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, called the measure "a critical action, and long overdue".

Trump plans to direct U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to launch an investigation into Chinese violations of the U.S. trade, including forced intellectual property transfers and patent thefts, CNN quoted senior administration officials as saying. "Those activities haven't abated; they've accelerated as China seeks to become self-sufficient in new technologies and dominate world markets", he said.

It's unclear whether any actual repercussions for China, like sanctions or tariffs, would come from an investigation like this, and officials said there is no timeline for how long an investigation would take.
