Car in Kings River

Police say signs were found July 26 of a vehicle that went off a freeway and over a cliff near Kings Canyon National Park, and a helicopter flying over the Kings River soon spotted a auto immersed in "raging waters" made more intense by the warm weather's snow melt. Steel told the families that she had been informed by the Fresno county office that a rescue team would descend the cliff and draw up a plan to retrieve the students and the auto.

Protests are planned in Fresno county, the scene of the accident, and Los Angeles, as frustration mounts with the slow progress of the operation.

I would like family members to know that recovering their loved ones is a top priority at my office right now.

The families of the students have made impassioned pleas for recovery efforts to go forward, but officials say conditions would make any attempt too risky.

The consulate has coordinated with and received the support of elected officials in California including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who has asked the consulate to convey his support for the efforts of the consulate and the Thai-American community. "We appreciate your patience and understanding".

It is unclear when the Thai state officials were notified and became involved.

The consulate's post noted that authorities believe the vehicle was headed to Kings Canyon National Park on July 26 when it crashed through a guard rail and plunged into the Kings River.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Police said that the airbags had been deployed and were blocking authorities from seeing inside. "The water level has continually decreased and the recovery operation may be done soon". They have since visited the site of the accident and prayed at local Buddhist temples, according to the consulate.

"Both Thai families feel disappointed and sad".

Today, Jim McDonell, Los Angeles County sheriff, is coordinating with his counterpart in Fresno County.

A helicopter scouting the area found the auto standing half upright in King's River. "A date of when this will happen is still to be determined".
