Kentucky mayor announces removal of Confederate statues in wake of Charlottesville

Gray will ask on Tuesday the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council to petition to the Kentucky Military Heritage Commission to have statues in the city relocated.

The mayor of Lexington, Kentucky is accelerating his plans to remove Confederate statues from key locations in the city due to violence spurred by white nationalists in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday.

The Lexington mayor had originally planned to announce the move next week, but was compelled to take immediate action after horrific events in Charlottesville, in which clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters resulted in one death and many injuries.

- Mayor Jim Gray (@JimGrayLexKY) August 12, 2017The tragic events in Charlottesville today have accelerated the announcement I meant to make next week.

Jose Mourinho explains why he signed Nemanja Matic at Manchester United
They didn't sell, like some were expecting, the top players - (Mesut) Ozil, Alexis (Sanchez). Chelsea are the champions, lost some players but bought some players.

The statues of John Hunt Morgan and John C. Breckinridge stand outside the city's courthouse. "We have completely analyzed this issue, and got notification from a number of our residents", Mayor Jim Gray (D) said on Twitter. But New Orleans avoided the violence that befell Charlottesville as that city prepares to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee; Charlottesville renamed its Lee Park as Emancipation Park. Morgan was a general for the Confederacy as well as a slave owner. Defenders of the statues often point to heritage or some other nebulous concept, but since the Confederacy explicitly fought to uphold the institution of slavery, and lost the Civil War 152 years ago, it's long past time to stop glorifying these people with heroic statues.

Lexington honors history. But that history must be accurate, he said. "But we also need to explain it accurately and truthfully".

No mention of where the statues would be relocated.
