Horrible.' Mr McClean, who worked for the Financial Times, had been surfing at nearby Elephant Rock.

24-year-old reporter came to Sri Lanka to relax and to surf.

Locals claimed the victim had been staying at the East Beach Surf Resort - located just minutes away from the surfing area he went missing from.

The British foreign office said in a press statement: "We are assisting the family of a British man who has died in Sri Lanka".

McClean, from Ditton in Surrey, joined the FT in 2015 having graduated from Oxford with a first class degree in French.

"We are in touch with them, doing all we can to help during this hard time".

Sri Lankan police and the army are said to be searching the shore surrounding the area.

J&K: BSF soldier killed in Pak firing
Pakistan Rangers started unprovoked firing and shelling on Indian positions and civilian areas in Arnia sector around 1 am today. The authorities have kept emergency services in readiness to meet any eventuality due to the ceasefire violation by Pakistan.

His colleague Katie Martin described him as "a talented young journalist with a curious mind" and "a joy to be around with an impish sense of humour". "It was when he was washing his hands that the crocodile took him".

Fawas Lafeer, owner of Safa Surf School, located near the coast from where the tragic incident took place, told the BBC Radio 5 Live that surfers from his school were called to help fishermen attempting to rescue the journalist.

Lafeer arrived to briefly see an outstretched arm reaching out of the water, the Post reported.

"We are in touch with them, doing all we can to help during this hard time", James Lamont, the FT's managing editor, was quoted as saying in the report. The official said the body has been sent for autopsy. "It is nearly unheard of for them to come close to the beach", he said.

However, the newspaper stated it was believed McClean had been attacked by a crocodile.

By the time authorities arrived at the scene, it was too dark to search the lagoon, the newspaper said. Last year, a 60-year-old man was killed by a crocodile while fishing in the Paayindan River in Sammanthurai.
