After Irma, Florida's Smart Grid Needs the Longest and Most Complex Restoration in US History

Storm Update Power companies working to restore power

Rick Scott escorts President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence surveying from the damage from Hurricane Irma in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday, September 14, 2017. On Monday, when Florida was at the height of the power outages, 6.7 million accounts were impacted.

Most of those costs were related to Matthew, which caused a third as many outages as Irma did for FPL. Locations without power have been flagged to the state to help utilities prioritize their work, the group said in a statement.

However, FPL took to Twitter to clarify that they are not responsible for food loss from the hurricane. A workforce of more than 21,500 employees and contractors from almost 30 states and Canada have worked around the clock. The Utility says customers should expect to have it by end of day Sunday.

FPL customers are encouraged to visit wwww.fplmaps.com, and JEA customers can visit www.jea.com to track power outages by address and by county, and to report service interruptions to their home or business.

The faster restoration time was due to $3 billion FPL spent on improvements including underground lines, concrete poles and intelligent devices to help restore power, Gould said.

Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU), the main utilities company for Florida Gators, have been very successful in their restoration efforts. Almost 25 percent of all customers in Miami-Dade County still don't have power.

"Our restoration team, comprised of more than 21,500 men and women from almost 30 states and Canada, is making steady progress every hour across 27,000 square miles of territory impacted by Irma, and we continue to bring thousands of customers back on each and every day".

Florida Power and Lights, the state's largest utility provider, said it has 21,500 personnel assigned to power restoration.
