St. Catherine Security Guard Out of Hospital; Police Trying to Determine What Happened

St. Kate's security officer admits to shooting self, lying to police

Ahlers was guarding the St. Catherine University campus when the gun he was carrying discharged, wounding him in his shoulder Tuesday night. Authorities conducted an "exhaustive" search for the suspect after Ahlers told police a "black male" was responsible for his injury.

Police set up a perimeter around campus and 55 officers, four dogs, and even a Minnesota State Patrol aircraft were involved.

'(The event) had, basically, 1,800 students held captive in their dorm rooms on the college of St. Catherine, ' Sgt. Mike Ernster said, according to KSTP.

"It had residents of the Mac-Groveland and Highland Park communities fearful that a suspect was on the loose and they could be victimized at any moment", Ernster said.

Dianne Binns, president of the St. Paul NAACP, told the Star Tribune that Ahler's decision to describe the nonexistent suspect as a black man is rooted in the racism that perpetuated slavery and the oppression of blacks for hundreds of years. He told investigators during questioning on Wednesday that he accidentally shot himself with his handgun and lied about it because he feared losing his job, according to St. Paul police.

The officer, Brent Patrick Ahlers, 25, was placed on a paid leave of absence Wednesday while the investigation continued into his report that he had been shot by someone in a darkened area on campus Tuesday at 9:25 p.m.

Ahlers admitted he shot himself and said he made up the suspicious person excuse because he was afraid of being terminated from his job.

Instead of admitting to it, he allegedly blamed an imaginary black man and lead investigators on a wild goose chase, the Star Tribune reported. "We've been lynched, and we've been put in jail to find out later you haven't done it". "They carry other means of protection, but there are no firearms on campus for our security staff". He was cited for falsely reporting a crime, which is a misdemeanor.
