State jobless rate rose to 5.1 percent in August

The 3 percent unemployment rate for August compares with a rate of 3.1 percent in July and 3.2 percent in August 2016.

The state Employment Development Department said Friday that non-farm payroll employment statewide totaled 16,777,800 in August, reflecting a net loss of 8,200 jobs from July. Seven major industry sectors added jobs, with four adding 3,300 or more jobs each.

North Dakota and Colorado had the lowest unemployment rates in August at 2.3 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively. Alaska again held the worst-state title, with a jobless rate of 7.2 percent. Madison County's unemployment rate remained the lowest at 1.6 percent.

Gains was also reported in other services (+1,800), trade-transportationutilities (+1,700), and construction (+1,600). The largest increase over the past 12 months was in leisure and hospitality (up 25,000), while the largest decline was in government (down 9,600).
