5 Dead After Evacuation of Florida Nursing Home: Mayor
The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills said in a statement Wednesday that Hurricane Irma had knocked out a transformer that powered its air conditioning. For example, it said the facility's certified nursing assistants significantly exceeded state and national averages for the amounts of time they spent with each resident daily. Most of the deaths are believed to be heat related.
Information on the state Agency for Health Care Administration's website said the nursing home's current license was effective July 17 and expires July 16, 2019.
High temperatures at the nursing home's location were in the 90s Tuesday and Wednesday.
"It's a sad event", said Tomas Sanchez, the police chief in Hollywood, the city north of Miami where the retirement facility is located.
The facility is not the only Florida nursing home that has been left without power by Irma.
Eight residents died at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills after the facility lost air conditioning.
"As with millions of other Floridians, our centers are coping with the loss of power and infrastructure in the communities that were most affected by the devastation", the Florida Health Care Association said in a statement Wednesday.
Though the number of people with electricity had drastically improved from earlier in the week, some 6.8 million people across the peninsula continued to wait for power, and utility officials warned it could take a week or more for all areas to be back up and running.
FPL has said earlier this week that the company prioritizes restoring power to critical facilities such as hospitals, police and fire stations, communications centers, water treatment plants, transportation and shelter.
