Google Deletes Inactive Android Device Backups After 2 Months

17 September 2017, 01:20 | Megan Pierce

Your Android backups will be deleted if your device is inactive

Google will automatically delete Android backups if a device is inactive for two months

According to Google's backup policy, "Your backup will remain as long as you use your device". Reddit user Tanglebrook found this out the hard way: by losing all his data. Worst of all, even the paid version of Google Drive's 100 GB of storage does not keep the data, and it is lost once deleted. However, upon checking the Google Drive backup folder, this user discovered their old Android phone's back up was gone, and that's because it was deleted due to lack of activity on the backed up device.

We are constantly being told to backup our data to ensure it remains safe in the event of your device, be it a PC, laptop, tablet, or smartphone, breaks or gets stolen.

So if you're using your phone or tablet constantly, no worries. Unless, of course, those backups get deleted with nearly no warning, kind of like what Google will do for your Android device if you don't use it for a couple of months. "There's apparently an expiration date that shows up under the backup if I had checked the Backup folder sooner, but there was no notification, no email, no proactive notice at all, and most importantly, no option to use the 100gb of my Drive storage to keep my f* backup", Tanglebrook said in his post on Reddit.

After the data of wiped out or deleted - there is no way that you can retain the data. If you don't use your Android device for two months, its backup data will be deleted and that's all there is to it.

According to the Google's official policy, a user's Android backup is marked for "expiration" if its servers detect that it has not been used for two weeks. However, it will be of concern for some Android users who've stored back-ups on old devices and switched to iOS.

Google Drive is an unbelievable data backup tool for Android devices, which also facilitates an easy switch to another Android device.

After contacting Drive support, Tanglebrook's fears were confirmed: The backup was gone.
