The Latest Deaths at nursing home sound alarms after Irma

Relatives who have family members in the facility have started to gather outside the two-story gray building that is situated among a cluster of medical facilities and hospitals.

"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job", Bush said in a remark that quickly became a symbol of the botched federal response to a storm that killed more than 1,800 people. "We all have elderly people in facilities, and we all know we depend on those people in those facilities to care for a vulnerable elderly population".

The death toll has risen, and may continue to rise, at a Florida nursing home that lost air conditioning as a result of Hurricane Irma.

"We are devastated by these losses". Workers scrambled to keep patients cool with emergency stocks of ice and Popsicles.

The woman with the camera then goes out into the hallway, where a naked woman who appears to be sleeping or unconscious is slouched on a gurney.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson called the six deaths in Hollywood "an inexcusable tragedy" and called on authorities to get to the bottom of it.

The police and fire departments were called to the nursing home around 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Another 18 patients in an adjacent behavioral health facility are also being evacuated, Storey said. It shouldn't be up to administrators in nursing homes to make those judgment calls. Florida Power & Light, reportedly claims, the center was not on the county's high priority power restoration list. City and state officials said they were in contact with the nursing home for three days and advised them to call 911 if they believed that the health or safety of patients was at risk.

Through a representative, Carballo told the SunSentinel newspaper that the home has a back-up generator but that it does not power the air conditioning. Of course it's an older type of building, but it was well-maintained and very caring.

They began at 5:34 p.m. on Monday, with the first call going to the number Governor Scott was publicizing throughout the week.

"Things look real damaged from the air, but when you clear the trees and all the debris, it's not much damage to the houses", said Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced Thursday night that he directed the Agency for Health Care Administration to terminate the center as a provider for Medicaid, which provides health care for low-income individuals and families. Four victims died in the nursing home and detectives had to recover one body from a funeral home, city officials said. Broward County hadn't identify this nursing home as a "top-tier, critical infrastructure" facility, he said.

The nursing home has a history of safety violations and citations, including two for not following generator regulations in 2014 and 2016.

Craig said nursing home staff had assured her before the storm that they were prepared to safely shelter residents through the hurricane, and were equipped with generators, food and other necessary supplies.

"I wasn't there, because I swear to God if I was there I can call the police and scream", Veroy told NBC6.

A criminal investigation has been launched into deaths of Bobby Owens, 84; Manuel Mario Medieta, 96; Miguel Antonio Franco, 92; Estella Hendricks, 71; Gail Nova, 71; Carolyn Eatherly, 78; Betty Hibbard, 84; and Albertina Vega, 99.

At the Hollywood nursing home, Jean Lindor, a kitchen worker, said through a Haitian Creole translator that the air conditioner had not been working since the storm and it had been hot inside. "Portable A/C units were being used in the facility, but the facility was excessively hot".

People who fled their homes in hard-hit islands including St. Martin and the U.S. Virgin Islands that were all but cut off from the world for days arrived in San Juan late Tuesday.
