On Friday, Trump again jumped into the fray, promoting his handling of extremist militants and saying the government should cut of the internet to such groups.
Trump is using the incident to defend his travel ban against six Muslim-majority countries.
However, former chief of staff to May Nick Timothy on Friday called Trump's "loser terrorist" tweets "unhelpful".
In March, the White House left United Kingdom spooks apoplectic when it cited unproven media reports that President Barack Obama had asked Britain's signals intelligence agency, GCHQ, to monitor then-candidate Mr Trump in order to "make sure there were no American fingerprints". The administration has yet to say whether it will seek to renew the bans, make them permanent or expand the travel ban to other countries.
