Mammograms save lives so why such confusing advice

A new study shows that women who undergo aggressive treatments for breast cancer tend to miss more work.

The majority of women in the study had surgery - either a lumpectomy that removes malignant tissue while sparing the rest of the breast or a mastectomy that removes the entire breast.

Self-examination is not enough to detect early-stage breast cancer, the Health Promotion Administration (HPA) said, urging women to get regular mammograms as recommended by the WHO.

Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in their lifetimes.

"It worries many women I think", said Missoula resident Camill Severti. About 252,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year, and more than 40,600 women are expected to die of the disease. On these grounds, researchers have been looking forward to promoting the usage of this test among women to raise the awareness levels regarding the prospects of developing breast cancer. Most (84 percent) worked full time before diagnosis. "It is awesome the power and the strength that women will find during their journey down a awful path they have to take, but I just see so many people come out on the other end and they are strong, and they have defeated this darn disease and they then are able to help other people".

29-percent of women who missed more than a month of work lost more than $5,000 in income. It is the time to inform people about it and to educate them and tell them about its effects, prevention and treatment methods. That is the figure estimated to all women with a BRCA gene mutation.

Talk to your doctor about what factors are increasing your risk for developing a breast cancer. "Patients need to understand how their choices may influence their employment, and patients need assistance to help ensure their treatment choices are truly shared decisions that weigh the potential employment impact of given treatment options".
