Windows Phone just died (again)

10 October 2017, 12:28 | Megan Pierce

With this new development, Microsoft has finally publicly acknowledged that Windows 10 Mobile is a dead platform, and moving on to Android or iOS device sounds like a better plan for these device owners.

Of course we'll continue to support the platform. bug fixes, security updates, etc, goal building new features/hw aren't the focus.

The news of Windows 10 Mobile's downfall could be down to the platform's small "volume of users", tweeted Belfiore, which prevented "most" third-party tech firms from investing in it. Belfiore said Microsoft had tried hard to attract developers, even to the point of building apps for them, but that there too few Windows mobile users for it to be viable.

Citing the lack of app support and poor market share, Microsoft has finally made a decision to kill support for Windows 10 Mobile.

Chief executive Satya Nadella has also shifted the firm's focus to its cloud platform and products such as Office 365, a strategy that has proved successful in returning the company to a stable base.

From a recent sales figure disclosed by Kantar Worldpanel, just 1.3% United States mobile market sold Windows phone.

Back in July of 2017 we declared Windows Phone dead - but it seemed like we might have been just a hair too early.

He wrote: "Of course we'll continue to support the platform".

Facebook's hugely popular Messenger app was cut from a huge number of Windows phones in March this year. It was not until 2014 that Microsoft paid a total of around $7.9 billion for Nokia's smartphone business.

The writing has been on the wall for Windows Phone for a very long time. Windows 10 Mobile may attempt to make a comeback like Blackberry but with the near-defunct operating system, it is not going to be an easy task. Belfiore's tweets indicated that Microsoft can no longer survive in fierce competition against Apple's iOS and Google's Android.

Windows 10 Mobile tried to attract users by letting them run the same "universal apps" on both their PCs and handsets, but the concept failed to catch on.
