Tournament director Craig Tiley said on Tuesday the reigning Australian Open champion was close to returning to the game after taking time out for the birth of her first daughter in September.
Speaking after an announcement on what fans could expect of the 2018 tournament, he said: "Serena, the competitor that she is, she wants to win more than the 23 grand slam titles that she has".
And Australian Open organisers confirmed she is still pushing to return to the WTA Tour in Melbourne Park.
Including her seven Australian Open titles, Williams has won a total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than anyone else in the Open-era and one shy to tie the record held by Australian Margaret Court, who coincidentally, won three of her titles after returning from giving birth to a son in 1973.
Venus is in career-best form, achieving her highest ranking since January 2011 after she finished runner-up to Serena at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
If that's in Melbourne, she'll be competing for more money.
The men's and women's singles winners will each collect four million Australian dollars (£2.4m) in 2018, up from A$3.7m in 2017, while the entire prize money pool has increased by 10% to A$55m (£32.4m).
