Steven Spielberg Signs Deal with Apple to Bring Back Amazing Stories

Bryan Fuller reviving Spielberg's Amazing Stories as Apple series

Apple to reboot Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories

Though Apple's wallet is considerably thicker, the company is only looking to spend in the neighborhood of $1 billion in its first year.

For those too young to remember, Amazing Stories was a sci-fi/horror series that ran rom 1985 to 1987 on NBC.

The Wall Street Journal reports today that Apple has signed a deal with Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment production company to reboot Amazing Stories.

The deal comes less than 24 hours after Deadline reported Apple is nixing a planned series about Elvis Presley developed by The Weinstein Company in the wake of the sexual harassment accusations facing that company's recently fired co-founder, Harvey Weinstein.

Over the past two months, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, who left Sony Pictures Television in June to lead Apple's new programming unit, have been staffing up and scouting projects.

NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said, "We love being at the forefront of Apple's investment in scripted programming, and can't think of a better property than Spielberg's beloved "Amazing Stories" franchise".

Whether or not these new players will attract an audience will likely depend on content, not distribution mechanism.

But, wait: there's more - over at The Hollywood Reporter, they're saying the deal is expected to cover a full, 10-episode first season, and that Hannibal's Bryan Fuller is onboard to executive produce the series. Until now Apple's original video content - like the Carpool Karaoke spin-off - has been made available exclusively to Apple Music subscribers.

Bryan Fuller will serve as an executive producer on the Apple remake with Amblin's Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey also executive producing.
