RCPD and other Fire officials discuss the importance of Fire Prevention Week Oct. 9 2017
This week is National Fire Prevention Week, a chance for people across the country to take a look at how prepared they are for the unimaginable.
The Ivanhoe Fire Department isn't necessarily hosting a public Open House, but has plans to open its doors for scheduled visits from preschoolers on Thursday and K-6 students from Lincoln Elementary on Friday.
The theme of this year's National Fire Prevention Week - "Every second counts: plan two ways out" - reinforces the importance of having a fire escape plan. Fire and smoke spread so quickly that, despite the best efforts of fire departments and fast response times, firefighters may not be able to arrive in time to rescue you and your family. In a fire situation, when the smoke alarm sounds, a practiced home escape plan ensures that everyone knows how to use the precious minutes wisely.
Kids that learn about fire prevention tend to remember what they were taught the year before, so focusing on different topics really helps.
"You had more natural Fabrics like wool and cotton and wooden frames in the modern based living room [today] you have more petroleum based products", said Damon Robbins, Fire Inspector.

"You don't have time to gather all the belongings or any special mementos or anything like that", he said.
Such a plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom and near all sleeping areas.
The National Fire Protection Association estimates that US fire departments responded to an average of 358,300 home structure fires per year during 2010-2014.
You can go here to find out how to develop your own home escape plan. Never go back inside a burning building.
Make sure your smoke alarms work. CO and smoke detectors that are over ten years old should be replaced as they have reached the end of their life expectancy. "At first, we sought cities that had experienced a number of fire fatalities, but we've have since tried to reach out to fire departments in every corner of the state".
