Donald Trump said NBC should lose its broadcast license after the network's news division reported on comments he allegedly made about radically expanding the U.S.'s nuclear arsenal during a national security meeting.

The Federal Communications Commission issues broadcasting licenses in the U.S. largely to ensure stations don't trip over each other when transmitting.

The network said the president "surprised the military" by making a request for an nearly tenfold increase of nuclear weapons in a meeting over the summer, which allegedly prompted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to call Trump "a moron".

President Trump criticized NBC in a series of tweets Wednesday morning, also suggesting that the network's broadcasting license should be reviewed.

After Trump's remarks to the press, CNN senior media correspondent Brian Stelter reacted by saying that the president is indeed calling the media "disgusting" and the "idea of a free press disgusting".

US President Donald Trump has threatened to challenge the broadcast licences of NBC and other networks in a series of tweets.

Both Bennet and DeGette are Democrats.

"Trump indicated he wanted a bigger stockpile, not the bottom position on that downward-sloping curve", NBC News reported, adding that those present were surprised by the request. Pure fiction, made up to demean.

Last week, the president asked in a tweet why the Senate Intelligence Committee was not looking at American media companies. Instead, licenses are issued to local stations.

"I'm a person in the West Wing who's never actually uttered the words 'fake news, ' 'enemy of the people, ' 'opposition party.' I don't speak that way, '" Conway said during a talk at Fortune's Most Powerful Women summit in Washington, D.C. "Before we can renew a station's license, we must first determine whether, during the preceding license term, the licensee has served the public interest; has not committed any serious violations of the Communications Act or the FCC's rules; and has not committed other violations which, taken together, would constitute a pattern of abuse", the document says. Comcast, which owns NBC, owns several licenses in major markets such as NY and Los Angeles.

The report comes as Trump is preparing for an 11-day trip to Asia, where he will seek to bolster worldwide support to pressure North Korea to curb its nuclear and ballistic missile weapons testing. Markey also called the president's challenge of a broadcaster's license "inappropriate". "Any insinuation that elected officials could use the levers of government to control or censor the news media would represent a startling degradation of the freedom of press".
