Aloha, Southwest! Airline makes major announcement about future service

Southwest Airlines is planning to offer flights between Hawaii and the mainland and expects tickets to go on sale next year, airline officials said. By offering lower fares itself, Southwest Airlines has forced its competitors to lower theirs, according to a 2017 study, which confirmed the continuation of a trend marked by a federal study from the 1990s.

The Dallas airline began to fly outside the U.S.in 2014 when it took over flights to the Caribbean from its subsidiary AirTrans.

Fans of Hawaii are hoping that "the Southwest Effect" happens next year when Southwest Airlines hopes to begin serving islands in the Pacific.

Southwest President Tom Nealon and Gov. David Ige joined the announcement via satellite from Waikiki.

"The Max will be our Hawaii aircraft but, we'll start with our ETOPS-equipped -800 fleet to accelerate our service launch date", says Southwest chief executive Gary Kelly. This has been a long time coming so there's no particular reason for us to rush it. Later that year, Southwest began flying to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. It will initially operate ETOPS-equipped Boeing 737-800s to Hawaii, before switching to the 737 Max 8 which it placed into revenue service earlier this month. The airline plans to have over ten MAX aircrafts in service by the end of this year.

"Our seat-mile costs are below (other airlines serving Hawaii) and we will offer lower fares than now are in the marketplace". "Low costs come from very efficient operations".
