Rose McGowan's Twitter account suspended after Harvey Weinstein tweets
The #WomenBoycottTwitter campaign began at midnight Thursday in NY from software engineer Kelly Ellis, who criticized the social media platform for failing to support "victims of hate and harassment".
McGowan said late Wednesday that Twitter had suspended her from tweeting after the social media company said she broke its rules. The social network's lack of transparency has led to a great deal of frustration and confusion.
Most recently, the actress' Twitter was suspended after she posted a private phone number during her explosive Harvey Weinstein blowout.
A number of high-profile women were among those calling for a boycott, with several highlighting examples of abuse they had suffered online which had not resulted in the suspension of perpetrators' accounts.
In a series of FIRE tweets to Amazon president Jeff Bezos, accusing him of killing her project after she spoke out about Weinstein, she finally says the words outright.

"Twitter is proud to empower and support the voices on our platform, especially those that speak truth to power", the rep continued.
Since the allegations against Weinstein came to light, McGowan has called out many other Hollywood insiders, including Ben Affleck.
But groups of women voluntarily silencing themselves seems like a counterintuitive method of protesting exploitation and abuse that is largely protected by a "code of silence".
The company's official account also tweeted: "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".
The settlement stemmed from an incident at a hotel during the Sundance Film Festival but exact McGowan was seemingly forbidden from speaking about them because of a nondisclosure agreement.
