US Congress tangles with Facebook, other social media firms over Russian Federation probe

US Congress tangles with Facebook, other social media firms over Russian Federation probe

The company and others have said they are turning over information, but also that they are legally obligated to protect their users' privacy.

Facebook has admitted it shouldn't have allowed fake Russian accounts to fund ads supporting Trump in the USA election and will do everything in its power to help authorities get to the bottom of the alleged election interference campaign. The accounts created to fund the ads and the ads themselves have now been removed, however.

This is an ongoing investigation, the new information will be posted as being reported.

"Things happened on our platform in this election that shouldn't have happened", Sandberg said during an interview in Washington with the Axios news website. If the company accepts that it is a media firm, it would open the platform up to regulatory rules in the U.S. and other countries which Facebook would rather avoid.

Sen. Susan Collins won't run for governor, will remain in US Senate
Leading pro-life groups had called on members of the Senate to pass the reconciliation bills that the House had already approved. The Republican senator said she made her decision based on where she could do the most for ME and the country.

A member of Congress who viewed about 70 of the roughly 3,000 ads told The Associated Press that they were meant to stir up strong emotions on all sides. "We are taking a deeper look to investigate attempts to abuse our systems, working with researchers and other companies, and will provide assistance to ongoing inquiries".

Twitter engineers are trying to regenerate some of the lost data, and may be able to retrieve some of it, said a person familiar with the company's technology. Last month, Facebook agreed to hand over the ads to congressional investigators in addition to special counsel Robert Mueller. Trump has denied any such collusion. "We're angry, we're upset, but what we really owe the American people is determination", to address foreign meddling.

But Sandberg acknowledged the company had erred in how it handled the issue of foreign interference previous year. "And I just think it's fallacious for them to argue that they don't have a responsibility and that they haven't had influence", he said. "What we needed Facebook to understand is that they play a role in the perception of African-Americans, and they are influencers that use their platform to influence this country".
