Anne Cameron, 79, was reported missing from the Ozcare aged care facility at Port Douglas on Tuesday.

A woman missing from a nursing home in Queensland's Port Douglas may have been taken by a crocodile, after clothing, her walking stick and "biological matter" was found near a creek.

Pathologists in Cairns confirmed on Friday that the remains were human, Mr Lukin said.

"Because of the proximity of these items and this unknown material located near this creek bank, we can not rule out the possibility of a croc attack", Acting Inspector Ed Lukin told reporters at a news conference.

This croc was spotted in the area on Friday.

Mr Joyce said the reptiles often travelled from one body of water to the next and used the ocean as a "crocodile highway", which made identification hard.

Joyce said a decision would be made on the fate of the animal once it was captured.

'It is my deep regret to inform you that following an extensive search and the discovery of certain items as a result of that search, we have the firm belief that my nan Anne Cameron has passed away in tragic circumstances, ' she wrote. She loved her life up here she loved being with us ... she loved the facility she was at and that she had the freedom to come and go. They had only recently moved her to the area and said she would often go for afternoon walks and get lost.

'Our secure area is home to residents who are placed there under the advice of a medical officer'.

Cameron's disappearance has prompted calls from Katter's Australia Party members for its Safer Waterways Bill to be pushed through State Parliament.

Authorities are hunting a crocodile suspected of snatching elderly woman at a creek in northern Australia, police said.

Michael Joyce, wildlife director of the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, told the newspaper that rangers had set traps near the water and crews were searching by boat and helicopter for the crocodile.

The animal thought to be the culprit is much larger.

The attack site is near the Mowbray River, where crocodiles are known to be present.
