Apple sued for dual camera patent infringement

Apple sued over dual-camera tech in iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus

Israeli company sues Apple for dual lens camera patent infringement

The company filed a lawsuit in the US District Court in Northern California, where Cupertino is located.

Israeli startup Corephotonics has filed lawsuit claiming Apple infringed on its patents to create the dual cameras in the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus, Reuters reports.

Tel Aviv University professor and CEO of Corephotonics Dr. David Mendlovic founded the Israeli start-up in 2012.

The relationship between Apple and Corephotonics then turned sour, the lawsuit alleges. It's now unclear which part of the camera infringes on the patents, as no details have been made public. The latest lawsuit, however, strikes at the heart of one of Apple's most recent victories, its dual cameras. The lawsuit highlights how Corephotonics' dual aperture camera technology has two fixed-focal length lenses, including a wide angle and a telephoto lens, which is what Apple uses in its iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus. Apple praised the start-up's technology but refused to license it, Corephotonics said, even suggesting it could infringe the latter's patents with little effect. Apple allegedly knew about the patents, but their “lead negotiator” said it would take years and millions of dollars before reaching an agreement, a spokesman of Coreophotonics noted.

Somehow, consumers also got roped into the lawsuit.

Premiere of Louis CK film scrapped amid sexual misconduct allegations
Another anonymous woman said C.K. masturbated in front of her in his office on The Chris Rock Show in the late 90's. In 2015, Gawker published a story detailing allegations of mistreatment of women by Louis C.K.

Corephotonics' suit says Apple was not authorized to use its patented tech in the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus.

As you would expect, the plaintiff is seeking monetary compensation for damages and legal fees.

With a retail price of $999, the iPhone X with 64 GB of NAND memory is also the most expensive iPhone to date, allowing Apple to maintain its typically high margins on the device, according to IHS.

We've reached out to Corephotonics and Apple for comment and will update if we hear back.
