Christopher Plummer is set to replace Spacey in the role of J Paul Getty, with reshoots of key scenes expected to start immediately to keep the film's December 22 United States release date.
The report came just hours after a former TV news anchor alleged that Spacey sexually assaulted her teenage son past year, at a restaurant in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The film retells the kidnapping of Getty's grandson in 1973. According to Deadline, the decision to replace Spacey and reshoot all of his scenes was "unanimous" among the film's cast and crew. This comes following sexual assault and harassment allegations against Spacey.
The film was recently pulled from the AFI Fest due to the news revolving around Spacey, but the studio was standing by releasing the film on its original date.
Spacey's career has nosedived since the first allegation of sexual advances were made by actor Anthony Rapp on 30 October. He took over Spacey's role as J. Paul Getty, the industrialist who was named by the the richest living American in1966 by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Spacey's representatives say he is seeking unspecified treatment.
