Baker says the attack had "nothing to do with politics". Rand Paul, pleaded not guilty in court Thursday to breaking six of the Kentucky Republican's ribs.

"I hope that that doesn't happen", Boucher's lawyer Matt Baker said, admitting the possibility of a a federal charge "is a concern".

Baker added that Boucher has been interviewed by US Capitol Police, who he said were interested in whether the incident was politically motivated. "It has to do with a disagreement between two neighbors".

The suspect who allegedly attacked Republican Senator Rand Paul has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge.

"Last week, Sen. Paul was vigorously assaulted by someone in his neighborhood".

He's accused of tackling Paul, his longtime neighbor, while mowing his lawn on Saturday.

Boucher's only words were "yes sir" as he replied to a judge during the arraignment Thursday, keeping his head lowered and showing no emotion, according to ABC News.

Boucher is a retired anesthesiologist and has lived next door to Paul for 17 years. Boucher is scheduled for a November 30 pre-trial hearing.

The office of Warren County prosecutor Amy Milliken is working with Kentucky State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, she shared, though did not provide further details.

Paul tweeted Wednesday night, "I appreciate all of the support from everyone".

Boucher's charges could go up if it turns out Paul's injuries, which have forced him to miss Senate work, turn out to be worse, Milliken said.

The ongoing mystery is what led to the assault.

Paul, 54, told police that Boucher came onto his property in a gated community near Bowling Green and tackled him from behind, the Bowling Green Daily News reported, citing an arrest warrant.

An attorney for Boucher provided ABC News with a statement Monday, saying that the incident was unrelated to politics and instead spurred by a "trivial" dispute.

It was initially reported that Paul had five broken ribs and small cuts to his nose and mouth after the November 3 attack.
